Buy.com sucks, so does greatfunonline.com

After buying something at buy.com, I was presented a link labelled, "get $25 back from your purchase". I clicked the link without reading the fine print that it accompanied:
  • This click caused my my Visa number to be sent from Buy.com to greatfunonline.com
  • This enrolled me in the "Great Fun Online" service, which rebills $10 monthly to my Visa

Shit! I found a scam. I would have expected a little more to the sign up process for the $120/yr. service:

  • being told upfront what the service costs
  • being told upfront what the service is
  • having to reenter my Visa number
  • clicking an "I accept rebilling" button

So I looked for the "Cancel Membership" button. There was none on the entire site.

I decided to use their feedback form to attempt to cancel. I typed in my email address and membership number and pleaded for them to cancel my account. This resulted in an autoresponder email message, "you cannot cancel via email, you must call this 1-800 number only available Monday to Friday".

So I called the 1-800 number today, being the first Monday after my signup. After a maze of automated messages and prompts I finally got in touch with an operator:
Jesse: I'd like to cancel my account
    Operator: Membership number?
    Jesse: 7842312387
    Operator: Last name?
    Jesse: W-I-L-S-O-N
    Operator: Address?
Jesse: 15175 southwest Walker Unit C
    Operator: Zipcode?
    Jesse: 97006
Operator: Ok, I can't find your account.
Jesse: I've got a membership number here. 7842312387.
Operator: 7842312387. No such account exists. When did you create your account?
    Jesse: Saturday, two days ago.
Operator: Oh. Your account isn't active in our system yet. It takes 72 hours to become active, and it can't be cancelled until its active.
Jesse: Okay. So could you do me a favor?
    Operator: Sure.
Jesse: Write yourself a note on a piece of paper, "Cancel 7842312387 Tuesday"
Operator: Oh I can't do that, It's against company policy.
    Jesse: You can't? Why not?
Operator: Company policy says that you can't cancel an account within 72 hours.
Jesse: Can I talk to the policy maker?
    Operator: No.
Jesse: Can I talk to a manager?
    Operator: No.
Jesse: So I have to call back tomorrow?
    Operator: Yes, please do.
    Jesse: Bye!

Moral of the story? I'm still a member of greatfunonline, even though I've tried to cancel it two different ways. Sucks to me.

Do not spend your money with Buy.com or greatfunonline.com

  • Im with you,i also bought something from buy.com and ended up with this useless scam membership from great fun,i was suppose to get a $100.00 rebate via e mail, never did so they kept chargeing me $8.99 for over a yr,the only way i knew i had a membership was i recived a postcard saying my membership was going up,i called the 800 # and asked what membership i've never recived any thing,i would think i would had gotten a membership card, email or something but no nothing,so this is a good lesson,i've paid over $100.00 for nothing,i called them back, saying i want my money or my rebate that was promised of course their favorite word NO,can't help you,so please everyone watch what you do,don't fall for this scam,im sure their our more of us out there, just say no to greatfunonline.com !!!
    oh i didn't even have a membership # to refere to,good luck!!!
I just got stung by Great fun. I took the bait at Buy.com in February and cancelled 2 days later. I just found out now (on a weekend when you can't do a thing) that Great Fun has stolen money out of my account for the last 2 months! I have contacted both Buy.com and Great Fun and demanded they they cease and desit and give my money back. I saved my paperwork , I alwasy do so that should help.

I was stupid for trusting both of them! If I don't get my money back ASAP and action the Attorney General wil be getting my letter. I hope there is some legal action in the works against these crooks.
Yeah, this company is definitely a scam. I signed up trying to get the $20 Exxon Gas Card.

The trial period cost $1 for the first month, so I figured it was worth it.

After inquiring several times about the Gas Card promotion, it was obvious I was getting the runaround.

First, they stated I'd get an email form for this gas card. Later, they told me I'd get the form through snail mail. After sending a couple more emails, I couldn't get a direct answer on how it works. The snail mail package has not arrived, it's been 3 weeks since I signed up.

Finally I canceled my account. Fortunately I only lost the $1 trial sign up fee, but it's clear this company is very, very unsavory.
They got me too...14 months of billing me 9.99 without my knowledge. I'm so mad, the phone system they use conveniently hung up on me twice after not finding my "member number" and not recognizing my name when the computer asked me to spell it. It's only four letters, come on! Then, finally, a person came on the line...of course you can't cancel online though you magically get signed up online. Of course you can't be refunded on the phone, you have to fax in a plea to some department that doesn't have phones or people that talk to "customers." I filed with the BBB, did anyone else? The worst part is feeling scammed all around...Buy.com sold us out, Great Fun's business is deception, and when I called the credit card company they somehow knew the charge would be for 9.99 when I mentioned Great Fun and gave me Great Fun's number before I could even think to ask for it. The credit card rep was like, "Why are you disputing the charge? Didn't know you were being billed, huh?" So everyone knows about this an it continues...come on. What a waste of life for everyone. And Great Fun is such an insult of a name! Grrrrr...

Umm I dont know why you counldn't cancel because I signed up with greatfunonline and I got the 20 gift card for gas and I canceled the day I got the card lol.
You have to be careful with Great Fun because they take a long time to process your rebate request and after 30 days your FREE trial is over and they start billing you. So send in your rebate form right away and as soon as you receive the rebate call the 800-number and cancel your account. If they are still trying to bill you, call your credit card co. or bank and tell them someone is fraudulently using your card (this is true if you have a documented cancel request).

Also, if for some reason your trial period is about to expire and you have not received your rebate CANCEL anyway. It's not worth the $20 to let them go ahead and start billing your account.
I got ripped off by them, too. They make it a nightmare to cancel. I called and got a woman who said, "This isn't billing, let me transfer you." Then I got a recording that said, "Due to the overwhelming positive response to our program, we are unable to take your call, please call back later." and it hung up on me! They billed me 9.99 and I never got a membership card, or the $10 cash back I was supposed to get from AVON.com, which is where I signed up in the first place. What a rip-off!
You people feel bad? I don't even remember doing it! I don't remember ever seeing or looking for any rebate check! And, that as 14 months ago, too. So I've given them $140!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Working now to get my money back.

The rep at my Visa company knew RIGHT AWAY want this was. She pulled out the company before I could even give her the name!

    Complaint Description - Posted 12-3-2007
On November 3rd, 2007, I bought Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 with GPS Locator for $36.98 from their website but what was sent to me was a different less expensive item, Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 (no GPS Locator). I spoke to three customer service representitives on three different occasions who all advised the product image is correct and I would receive Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 with GPS. I was shipped the incorrect item twice. The customer service manager advised the product model number and price are correct but the product image is wrong but she would call me back with a decision to honoring the web advertisement after she checked with corporate. Instead, I got an email requesting I return the product for a refund.

    Complaint Summary
Web site falsy advertises a product.
    Resolution Sought

I feel they are intensionally misrepresenting the product on their website. I feel strongly that Buy.com should be held accountable for their advertising and send me Streets and Trips 2008 with GPS Locator for the advertised price of $36.98 as compansation for my time and energy. Also, they should correct their website by matching the model number to the image advertised.

We apologize for the image error posted. We have processed the refund to your original payment method instead waiting for the RMA to be processed.

    Consumer’s Rebuttal
The right thing to do is to deliver as advertised. I feel mislead and had a bad experience with Buy.com and they should honor their advertising. What was the cost to you for honoring this add? $20? You may have saved $20 but lost future revenue from me and 10 of my friends.
Beware of Buy.com! I ordered a Bearcat scanner from them, top of the line from what the sales associate said.I asked if I could return the item for a full refund if it didn;t work in my area because this has happened when I bought a scanner from Radio Shack,It appears that there is a function called trunking and the scanner I purchased did not have this.In so many words the Bear Cat BC350 is outdated and they are still selling them online as functional radios.
I called for an RMA# which I was given.I had to pay for the shipping from them and the shipping to send the item back which totaled approx $25.They said that they would reimburse me for the return shipment cost of basic ground which they did not even though I shipped it the way they requested.
READ BUY.COM'S RETURN POLICY BEFORE EVEN CONSIDERING BUYING ANYTHING FROM THEM.THEY HAVE THEIR BUTTS COVERED BY DISCLOSURE OF THEIR RETURN P0LICY!
The Major problem I have is they are selling equipment that is no longer any good.
I would never recommend them now will I buy anything from them again!
